I hate the snow

This is a photo of me in the giant slalom. I was fitted with artificial legs that had no knee joints and so I was able to ski by steadying myself with what we called outriggers which were Canadian crutches with short skis attached to the bottom. It was a wild ride. Some of the other things that we participated in were horseback riding and scuba diving. In 1970 our team traveled to Doe Mountain, PA to participate in their organized skiing event. This photo shows the hardware that we brought home from that event. I won the event for the bi-lateral above knee amputations and received the trophy you see in the picture that was almost as big as I was. In the winter of 1969-1971 I was part of a group of disabled veterans that were loosely organized into a team of sorts and the Hospital would sponsor skiing events for disabled veterans. I am on the left in this photo along with one of my instructors. A social worker at the hospital was on the ski patrol there and she was one of the people responsible for arranging this and other events for the disabled veterans. Her name is Mary Woolverton.
