The only problem I had with the XM 148 was that I had to carry enough ammo to supply two weapons. We were also each to carry at least two ribbons for the M60 machine gun, smoke and frag grenades and all of our personal items.

I used several different weapons while I was in country. I used the M16 rifle, the M79 grenade launcher, the 45 calibre pistol, the AR 15 rifle, the XM 148 rifle/grenade launcher combination (pictured) and the 106 recoiless rifle. I was assigned to E Troop, 17th Cavalry which was a "mounted" unit for about 50% of the time. We were used quite a bit for convoy escort and security when the big brass needed extra security. All of our big guns, including the M60 machine gun, the 50 calibre machine gun and the 106 recoiless rifle were mounted on the 1/4 ton jeep.

My MOS was 11H, which was for the 106 mm Recoiless Rifle (pictured). We called her "Big Bertha".

I came back to Utah for another 30 day leave during the Christmas of 1967 and was back "in country" by January 1968. These photos were taken at my parents home as I was in my dress uniform to return to Viet Nam. I didn't even have time to sew on my Sargent's stripes.

I was assigned to a great unit, The 173d Airborne Brigade (Sep). You can see the 173d patch, silver jump wings and combat infantry badge on my uniform as I stood for these photos with my parents.

After two months at Fort Gordon, Georgia for Advanced Infantry Training I was ordered to Fort Benning, Georgia for Jump School (Paratrooper Training). By the time I graduated from Jump School I was rock solid 120 pounds of rompin', stompin', Airborne steel. I was quickly humbled when I received orders to report for shipment to Viet Nam. I took a 30 day leave and arrived "in country" by January 4, 1967. On February 28, 1967 I was wounded in a mortar attack during the night and spent a week in the hospital in Saigon.

This is my photo from Basic Training at Fort Bliss, Texas in June and July of 1966. Fort Bliss is near El Paso and in June and July it is as hot as in Death Valley in California. From here I was assigned to Fort Gordon in Georgia for my Advanced Infantry Training.
